Choosing an ERP? Start with your processes, not the software

Consultants and a client mapping a business process with sticky notes on a glass wall

An ERP system can bring sales, inventory, finance and operations into one place. But a new system on top of an unclear process only makes the confusion faster.

1. Map how work really flows

Before looking at any demo, write down how an order, a purchase or a month-end close actually happens today. Who does what, with which spreadsheet, and where do things get stuck? This map is the most valuable document in the whole project.

2. Fix the process first

Some problems need a new system. Many need a clearer process, a simpler approval or one shared list instead of five. Fix those first; the ERP will then support a process that works.

3. Decide what matters most

List the requirements that really matter, rank them, and be honest about your budget and the size of your team. That list, not a feature comparison, is what you choose an ERP against.

4. Plan the rollout in stages

Start with the modules that remove the most pain, agree on clear acceptance criteria for each stage and leave room for the data clean-up that every migration needs.

5. Invest in people

An ERP is only as good as the people using it. Training, simple guides and someone to ask in the first months make the difference between a system that is adopted and one that is avoided.
